Circumcisions

We understand that circumcision is a significant decision that may stem from various medical, cultural, or religious considerations.

Dr. Satya, with extensive experience in this field, performs circumcision as the second most common procedure after skin cancers.

This procedure involves the removal of the foreskin, offering potential benefits such as enhanced hygiene and fulfilling personal or cultural preferences.

What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a cosmetic surgical procedure which is now commonly performed in GP clinics. This procedure is mostly done for cultural or religious reasons, and rarely for medical causes such as phimosis (narrowing of foreskin)and chronic balanitis (infection of foreskin).

Circumcision can be done at any age, from birth to advanced age (for medical reasons and also for cancer).Adult circumcision (above 16 years) as well as baby circumcision is slightly complex due to the surgery – adults can bleed very easily after the operation whereas babies require minute stitching.

Procedure

This would be done under a local anesthetic injection. Babies may require premedication with Pamol. After 2-5minutes of the injection to the base of the penis, surgery would be performed using the cut-and-stitch technique. A cautery would be used for controlling small bleeders. The wound would usually be stitched with absorbable dermacryl stitches. These stitches would usually dissolve in 4-6 weeks time. After the operation, the wound will be dressed with a cotton bandage dressing for control of minor ooze and for support to the wound.

Preparation

You would be seen by Dr Satya Shanbhag for surgical assessment and discussion about the procedure and possible complications.

Complication(s)

Complications are typically uncommon. However early and minor complications can include; minor ooze, small swelling, and moderate pain which can be well controlled with analgesics. This should resolve within 3-7 days.

Major complications include bleeding and acute swelling with pain after the procedure. This is an emergency and you would need to either present to the clinic of if we are closed go to ED.

Wound infection and disruption can occur if wound care is compromised or strict advice is not followed. Some patients may develop blistering at the tip of the penis.

The general rule is if you take the care and advice provided around wound hygiene and be careful about exercise and sports any complication(s) will be absent to minimal.
