Influenza A is placing exceptional demand on the health system, so it’s important to know how to care for yourself at home and where to seek medical help when you need it.
If You’re Unwell, Stay Home
If you have flu symptoms, stay home and rest where possible. Drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration, wash your hands regularly, and cover your coughs and sneezes. Avoid close contact with others, particularly older people, babies, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.
It’s Not Too Late to Get Vaccinated
If you haven’t had your flu vaccine yet, it’s not too late. This season’s vaccine provides good protection against the influenza strains currently circulating.
Talk to our team about whether flu vaccination is suitable for you and your whānau.

Choose the Right Healthcare Service

For non-urgent health concerns, consider:
- Your GP or medical practice – for ongoing health concerns, prescriptions, assessments and general medical care.
- Your pharmacist – for advice about common illnesses, medications and minor health concerns.
- Urgent care – for health problems that require prompt attention but are not life-threatening.
- Health New Zealand’s online GP service – for appropriate non-urgent consultations.
- Healthline – 0800 611 116 – for free health advice and guidance about where to seek care.
When to Call 111
